JUST IN: Phyna’s sister Ruth Otabor dies weeks after being hit by Dangote truck Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija

Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija season 7 winner Phyna, has died, the family announced on Sunday. A statement issued by Eko Solicitors & Advocates and shared on Phyna’s social media confirmed Ruth passed away at about 6:30 a.m. on August 31, 2025.

Ruth had been critically injured after she was struck by a Dangote Group truck near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State on August 13, 2025. Eyewitnesses said the heavy-duty vehicle crushed her leg; she subsequently underwent an amputation as doctors fought to save her life. Despite medical intervention, her condition did not fully recover, and she remained hospitalised in the weeks after the accident.

The family asked for privacy while they grieve and said funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course. Phyna posted the solicitors’ statement on her verified Instagram account as relatives, friends and fans poured out condolences across social media. Many Nigerians joined in mourning and called for justice and improved road safety following the tragedy.

Reports say Dangote-affiliated entities had earlier pledged support for Ruth after the accident, and the incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of road-safety regulations and better protection for pedestrians and students in university towns. Authorities are yet to publish a detailed public account of the crash; further statements from the family, law enforcement or relevant companies are expected as investigations and funeral arrangements proceed.

Our condolences go out to Phyna, the Otabor family and all who loved Ruth in this difficult time.
